My statement on what's unfolding in Los Angeles.
A statement from Kamala D. Harris: Los Angeles is my home. And like so many Americans, I am appalled at what we are witnessing on the streets of our city. Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos. In addition to the recent ICE raids in Southern California and across our nation, it is part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division. This Administration’s actions are not about public safety —they’re about stoking fear. Fear of a community demanding dignity and due process. Protest is a powerful tool — essential in the fight for justice. And as the LAPD, Mayor, and Governor have noted, demonstrations in defense of our immigrant neighbors have been overwhelmingly peaceful. I continue to support the millions of Americans who are standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms.

Well, kids don’t have medical care & can’t go to the doctor like us. They don’t get to go to school like you & learn & play. They don’t have enough food or water or a safe place to live. “Why?”🥺 I feel my heart breaking. I can’t tell my son it’s some natural disaster. That there’s not enough food or medicine in the world. It’s that grown-ups are keeping these basic human rights away from children. It’s a choice. Two posts on Threads from Miss Rachel, a well-known children’s educator and entertainer. The first post says: “Leaders - Be so ashamed that your constituents are begging & pleading for you speak out and you stay silent. Be so ashamed that you put money & power & your career before the lives of precious children of God. Be so ashamed that our religions tell us to give to the poor, feed the hungry & open our arms to all children & you pretend that they mean only for some children.” The second post says: “Celebrities as well. If everyone says something it won’t be controversial anymore. It’s never been wrong to say starving and bombing kids is wrong. God help everyone have the strength to say something. Please, God.” A post on Threads from Ms Rachel, a popular children’s educator and entertainer: “If you want to be remembered for saying something about Gaza before the entire world does, now would be the time.”

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.
