The dirty little open secret to writing is that no one will ever know, nor care, how many drafts of a thing were written - people will only ever care about the crafted thing, and will, despite all knowledge to the contrary, assume it came out fully formed that way. No one thinks about shit drafts.

The most important thing in writing is to finish. A finished thing can be fixed. A finished thing can be published. A finished thing can be made into a movie.

An unfinished thing is just a dream. And dreams fade if you don't hold on tight enough.

So finish the thing.

Not SciFi, but certainly fantastical, this book is really old, but has informed my reading trajectory for many years. Mervyn Peake was utterly unique. 🪐📚

2.5 years ago I started the Wheel of Time.

I wanted to read it before watching the series, not knowing it was 14 books & thousands of words.

Tonight, I finished it.

It's probably the best series I've ever read, or will ever read. And now I have serious series grief.

At what point in a 'writing career' do you stop going "Aaaa aaaaa aaaaaaaa" and taking photos of your own books at events

Because I have not hit that point yet

THIS IS STILL SO MINDBLOWINGLY STRANGE AND EXCITING

LOOK AT THOSE, I WROTE THOSE

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.”

A no less vital admonition that deserves attn:

STAND OUT

“...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

This is how you become a writer: just pick one of the things that is deeply wrong with you. Make it a character. Now send it on a self-help journey or try to kill it. Now call it a book.

The Handmaid's Tale is a good book. But did you know that there's a book written by a Black woman about a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and societal decline. The book was published in 1993, but is set in 2024 following a presidential election 👀 #BookSky #BlackBookSky
