So don't lose all hope. When you see someone succeed in a grant, know they probably failed loads of times before. Just because you failed once doesn't mean you won't succeed. The academic career is really hard at the moment, but persevere. You learn from the mistakes and failures and get better!

It's easy to share the good news and success, but reality is more complex. Here's the full outlook, including all the failures:

failed at Wellcome ECA the first time round.
failed to get the BSI career enhancing grant twice.
failed at a BBSRC discovery.
failed with an EPSRC Open fellowship.
