Word of the Day is ‘catchfart’ (17th century): an obsequious individual who sucks up to the boss and always follows the political wind.

RIP to the great Diane Keaton. If you can find it, her book on Clown Paintings - for which she curated a large selection of flea market amateur clown portraits -mostly fantastically creepy - accompanied by the thoughts of famous people regarding clowns - is well worth a look.

Another recent film, not yet freely available on any streaming service. Fuck this quiz. There are a million films to choose from, no need to make this quiz so exclusive.

(Luckily, I'd seen a trailer. This film hasn't even been out for two months, so this is a bullshit question.)

all the press around the Ed Gein show seems to insist that Robert Bloch used Gein as the inspiration for Norman Bates - it’s become the accepted narrative - but here’s the thing: he didn’t!

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

Blustery day, isn't it? Here's the National Grid: Live generation data. Wind and solar are generating 74.2% of our electricity. Gas is generating 13.1%. And yet our household electricity prices are pegged to... the volatile price of gas. Which is the basis on which the right attacks... renewables.

Every civilization must contend with an unconscious force which can block, betray or countermand almost any conscious intention of the collectivity.

One of the first showings of Cameron's Aliens. Place was packed, so I was sat quite far back, which meant I was able to see the ENTIRE audience lift about a foot in the air when the presumably dead facehugger in the specimen jar lunged at Burke.
Well-mannered arthouse screening of Michael Haneke's Hidden. Entire audience let out a communal horrified gasp at the throat-cutting.
Got me thinking.. What's the strongest reaction you've seen an audience member have to a scene in a cinema?

During the birthday party scene in SIGNS I saw a whole row of young women literally throw their popcorn in the air like a cartoon.
