Just reading about UC professors' fight against loyalty oaths in 1949 for, oh, no reason at all.
A picture of an old, hardcover book on my lap. The book and dust jacket are moderately worn, with a tear at the top of the jacket and a couple of small coffee spots on the front. At the top is a line drawing of a portion of the Great Seal of the State of California (seriously, that's its full title), showing Athena's warrior aspect, helmet on head and spear in hand, though only the shaft of the spear is visible. The rest of the cover reads, in a calligraphic typeface: THE YEAR OF THE OATH by GEORGE R. STEWART in Collaboration with other professors of the University of California A concise and highly readable account of the fight for academic freedom at the University of California. Published at the height of the Red Scare in 1950, the book is an account of UC Regents' efforts to force a loyalty oath on tenured staff and faculty the year before, and professors' attempts to push back. N.B.: UC ended up firing faculty who refused to sign the oath. The professors sued and, in 1951, won on their case against the University. That same year, however, the California legislature passed a law requiring its own loyalty oath. Professors at CSU-predecessor state colleges lost their suit to overturn that law—a low point for the California Supreme Court. The court later ruled that the state could force UC professors to take the oath. This state of affairs lasted for something like 15 years before the court overruled this disastrous precedent.

We also offer a generous compensation package that includes health benefits, retirement plans and student loan repayment." The post includes a picture of what looks like an AI-generated image of Lady Justice. It's giving AliExpress figurine. It looks more sexualized than many depictions of her (and certainly more than I would expect from a government recruiting post). Her breasts are larger than normal, her waist smaller, her arm more slender. Both nipples are erect, and we can see the outline of her left areola. The text overlaid on the image includes ICE's logo, the URL of their legal careers site, and the slogan, "Not a career. A calling." I am going to go throw up now, thanks.

The last five months have been scary and isolating. Today's march in SF helped break that mold. It felt so good to be surrounded by people as outraged as I am about what the administration is doing.

Neagle, for those not familiar, is an absolutely wild case where Supreme Court Justice Stephen Field developed basically an obsessed stalker while riding circuit out in California

The president appointed Neagle to bodyguard him, and Neagle ultimately shot the stalker dead defending Field

Worth noting that something like one in five people has dyslexia—a *huge* proportion of the population. Book snobs, grammar scolds, and the typo police would do well to consider this before casting aspersions.

it’s also not easy for some people! my mom and I are Book People but my dad is a slow reader and it’s hard for him, it’s not an easy escape for everyone the way it is for many of us

this is why I also don’t sneer at people who read mostly YA - it’s good they’re getting some enjoyment out of books

This is why fascism is for losers. It is the last gasp of a group of ideologues who realize that they've already lost the future and have nothing to lose by burning it all down. Everything made more sense when I realized that a few years ago. Fascists are residual culture that refuse to go away.

Musk has said he wants a shutdown, and reporting has shown he is already making plans to use the shutdown to expedite his destruction of key government programs and services.
