The issue was with the babies, not the mothers. Getting cleared is good, but there are a whole host of things that can happen that midwives didn’t catch. Resulted in severe disabilities for the kids that are easily preventable when caught in time.

I’ve seen that go very, very badly —both perinatal & in post follow up. That option in hospitals in consult with medical providers would be ideal. A team approach.

It’s hard to say about prosecution, since the people giving birth were adults, but they should definitely be held liable.

It’s that thing of people thinking they can be homeless for a night or restricting their budget for buying groceries for a week & completely understand every issue that accompanies that state. They don’t know the half of it. They know just enough to insist it’s an easy fix or it’s not so bad.

Theory: we confuse “natural” with “healthy” in a lot of ways, & we never really define what “natural” means (see also: organic). Pair this with an insane overestimation of our own abilities to overcome nature because we’ve had medical & other interventions for so long.

The thing about America is that it is massive and diverse and absolutely beautiful, and the people here are extremely independent and individualistic, which is both a blessing and a curse. The US used to incentivize creativity/innovation, but now it's collapsing in on itself and we get to watch

We have some deep seated issues —some of those are worldwide (xenophobia), some are specific (guns, healthcare). But we’ve put the worst people in charge of both the government & industry & we’re somehow expected to function as if it’s not all breaking down.

That was my long-winded way of agreeing.
