I don't know how many times we will be told by the legacy media that Trump is moderating or backing off only to then see he is worse than ever. He is an authoritarian. He enjoys the cruelty. And the first thing he had Pam Bondi do after the shooting was to try to leverage it to get the voter files.

NEW: Over the years, Texas legislators have declined to pass at least three bills that would create siren or alert systems, a tool that Kerr County officials tried to secure for years before the July 4 flooding.

In Pope Francis’s last public address, he preached care of the marginalized, the vulnerable, and migrants, saying: “I would like all of us to hope anew and to revive our trust in others, including those who are different than ourselves.” May we heed his wish.

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

This was 100% predictable (and predicted). The big firms that capitulated will cave and do whatever Trump wants. He owns them and will humiliate them for the next 3+ years.

If you are a lawyer at one of these firms, leave now with your dignity.

If you are a law student -- is this what you want?

Kudos to the law firm Arnold & Porter. It is the largest law firm that is not either itself target by Trump or representing a firm targeted by Trump to sign the amicus brief in support of Perkins Coie. Put another way, A&P has no direct financial interest in the outcome of the case and yet signed.

A come-to-Jesus moment for American lawyers, and for America's most important law firms.

This is it.

This is the moment you always imagined, where you told yourself you would do the right thing -- where you told yourself that your profession would stand up.

Law firms refuse to represent Trump opponents in the wake of his attacks
The result is an extraordinary threat to constitutional rights of due process and representation and a far weaker effort to challenge Trump’s actions in court than during his first term.

It’s comforting for some lawyers to lament the “tough spot” Trump has put some law firms in. But I choose to remember what civil rights lawyers endured, and the integrity & courage they showed despite being considerably more vulnerable that well-resourced law firms being bullied by Trump.

I think some in the Senate have convinced themselves that the backlash to folding will be limited to “the left” and therefore ignorable.

Those people are deeply and profoundly misreading the moment and the stakes.

Virtually every swing district House Dem walked the plank to vote NO for a reason.
