anyway I’m posting so much bc I have a severe case of cat lap, so here’s a timeline cleanse.
A large brown and orange tabby, who is approximately 80% fluff, lying on her side with her legs outstretched on a person’s lap, which is covered in a white blanket. The cat fits comfortably in the dip between the person’s outstretched legs and will likely remain for quite some time, if the person is very, very lucky.

Tumblr user purgaytorysupremacy I just saw these tags and something I think would be genuinely helpful is if we stopped calling what all this ai slop is "ai" at all. I know that's the marketing and this might sound like a kind of pedantic difference but stay with me we've been using "ai" tools for decades. machine learning, neural linguistic learning, neural linguistic processing, algorithmic analysis? that's the stuff finding the breast cancer before it metastasizes. that's the stuff analyzing enormous datasets to find patterns in global warming and doing quality control. all that has been lumped in with the large language models and image production that is currently ruining our lives and cognitive functioning. and that's on purpose!! they want to be able to say to ai detractors that "well ai has some uses. don't you want to save lives?" and like. of course??? but LLMs ain't it, my guy. chat bots aren't going to save shit. also the "ai" that gets trained on these massive datasets don't have the kind of environmental impact as LLMs. when detecting cancer, for example, an ML is trained on a specific dataset ONCE and then is used over and over. with LLMs, that training is happening constantly and every time someone "touches the dataset (referred to as an "instance"). so while using ML, you might use dozens or hundreds of instances, that doesn't trigger the dataset to go reanalyse itself again like am LLM does bc new information is coming onto the web all the time. when doing ML, it's crucial to know exactly what's in the dataset you're comparing something to. so that's why there's a version every time the dataset gets trained. LLMs don't do that. the versions OpenAl and such release are modifications to how the database is read by the chatbot. it takes so much power because that thing that ML and NLP Al does a couple times a year at best, ChatGPT is doing constantly with hundreds of thousands (millions? billions?) of instances instead of a dozen researchers or analysts doing a couple hundred a month. (For reference, when I used Microsoft Azure, that's how they charged. You got like a "bank" of instances to use every month.) it is just fundamentally not the same thing, but it's in Sam Altman and all the weirdo technocrats' interests for you to conflate them. (Which, to be clear, is how it's reported and advertised. This understanding is on purpose. You're not dumb for not knowing.) So. Yeah. Anyway. Fuck LLMs lol
