In All About Love bell hooks talks about how most men will not know true love in their lifetimes because under patriarchy when given the option men choose power over love… And being in love is about a mutual sharing of power.

I feel like we need to keep saying this because it’s so insane: This is a legal U.S. resident who has been detained for over a month now for his political opinions.
The Department of Homeland Security denied Mahmoud Khalil permission to attend the birth of his first child, who was delivered at a New York hospital on Monday, according to emails reviewed by The New York Times.
Mahmoud Khalil’s Son Arrives After ICE Refuses to Let Him Attend Birth
Mr. Khalil, a permanent resident detained in Louisiana, had requested a monitored furlough for the birth. His request was denied in less than an hour.

this is about America but it has also been notable that a) the Chinese government have been trying really hard to raise the birth rate for the last few years, b) this has been accompanied by increasingly heavy handed patriarchy and anti-feminism, c) the project has completely failed.
Pronatalism is an authoritarian misogynist project.
One idea I have is not turning the country where the putative child would be raised into an authoritarian hellscape. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/21/u...

Last night was the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's midnight ride to warn the Minutemen of approaching British troops.

I want to take a moment to share an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence's grievances against King George III.

Remind you of anyone?

"The empire has done what empire always does—
it has crucified what it could not control.
Today is the day when fugitivity begins—not with running, but with staying.
Staying in the gap between what has been destroyed and what has not yet been revealed"

Maybe we should honor the women who were real astronauts.

From left to right are Shannon W. Lucid, Margaret Rhea Seddon, Kathryn D. Sullivan, Judith A. Resnik, Anna L. Fisher, and Sally K. Ride. NASA selected all six women as their first female astronaut candidates in January 1978.

To @carlislewheeling.bsky.social's point, I am currently in #NewYork state, not even two hours away from NYC and many of my neighbors look very red to me.
This from @jdcivicscience.bsky.social nails why small town, red America is not turning on Trump.

WOW. The Trump administration's efforts to punish immigrants by abusing the Social Security database ended up leading to a U.S. citizen being kicked off of Social Security because they accused him of being undocumented!
🚨News: A prominent author reached out to me about how the Trump administration tried to denaturalize her father-in-law and end his social security benefits and Medicare.

Her family speaks English and was able advocate for him. But what about those that can’t?

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants

the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever

they aren’t going into universities’ endowments

they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research
There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy

Harvard & others must counter this quickly

The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value
