My poem in the final edition of Artemis after it was highly commended in the Second Light competition. The final magazine was excellent and it was lovely to be in such good company. Second Light and Artemis will be much missed after decades supporting poetry and this will leave a large gap for me.
Jon Fosse, the Norwegian writer, is probably not everyone's cup of tea but I was really drawn into a short story (Elias)we read for a weekly fiction discussion group I go to. So I got a novella, Morning and Evening, from the library and it's equally weird and wonderful. Elias is available online

I had a poem shortlisted in the Cheshire Prize, judged by a panel of lecturers from the University of Chester where it's organised. It will go in their competition anthology. Another poem finds a home! I'll share it later.

I'm putting together a list of publishers who take submissions direct from novelists without an agent and it's proving very interesting. I'll blog about it when I have more. All suggestions welcome and for novels only as there are plenty for poetry and short fiction.

Just finished reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Not a new book, I know, but he's a gap in my reading. Enjoyable and probably more nostalgic now than if I'd read it at the time. I'm not a music buff like the protagonist but his records and tapes are all familiar in the backtrack to my life.

I’ve always enjoyed Ladybird spotting the ways poets present themselves in a reading situation. Last night’s TS Eliot prize readings at the Festival Hall was a grand opportunity for such a pursuit. Ten readers in a row. Here are a few jotted down impressions, gleaned from the on-line version of the show. Before you crucify me for such poor, ill-informed critical judgements, I do hereby declare I have only thoroughly read two of the contenders, so these are very much impressions of ‘what happened on the night’.
