Immunologist at Benaroya Research Institute and University of Washington, Seattle. Here for integrins, macrophages and weird sea critters. Also coffee, music, bad jokes, dogs. Opinions my own.
Some days recently, it feels like KEXP is the only thing keeping me going! And a good place to get a coffee and get some work done, with great music and no interruptions (don’t tell my lab😉)

The next step in trying to dismantle Infectious Diseases research - dismantle @niaidnews.bsky.social - should surprise no one that this a R-led proposal.

An unmitigated disaster for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of pathogens that affect everyone in the US

Great summary of today’s hearing on the NIH IDC case.
NIH indirects case update:

Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges.

Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides:

My research group is well funded, and I'm terrified. All scientific labs run on slim margins, typically 12-24 months from running out of $. NIH is not reviewing proposals right now- the wave of labs shutting down is looming closer. All scientists are anticipating a major precipice. Options? 1/5
If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.
I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues

I tell people all the time WHY I love being a scientist: I’m obsessed with creative problem solving that leads to discovery AND it helps humanity. I rarely talk about HOW science happens. My own brother didn’t know how I funded my lab. Science is under attack. Everyone needs to understand this👇
News reports on NIH cutting indirect costs may not be understood by many not dealing with science funding.

To do science, you need to apply for funding. This has becomer a highly competative process. Many good ideas are not funded due to a shortage of money.

Move to cut indirect cost rate to 15% could cost universities billions of dollars

My weekend with immunologists devising new strategies to treat cancer, allergy, Alzheimer’s, autoimmunity and infection. The WH has just paused peer-reviewed NIH funding that pays for these studies. If you care about human life, write your representatives. Demand that NIH funding is restored asap.
