I fear that what this first round with the Compact presages is the WH trying to claim that every university is going to need to sign the Compact or lose all federal funding.

It's an insane idea that will fail in court and alienate even more voters.

Which won't deter them at all.
NEW - White House spokesperson responds: “As long as they are not begging for federal funding, universities are free to implement any lawful policies they would like. However, the notion that universities should benefit from taxpayer money without responsibilities in return is terribly misguided.”
USC becomes the fourth university to outright reject the Trump campus "compact" -- joining MIT, Brown and UPenn www.latimes.com/california/s... @danielnmiller.bsky.social and I report:

🧵 Authoritarianism, Democratization, and Coalition Politics.

The consensus around here is, more or less, that the United States is currently a consolidating authoritarian regime controlled by a mix of reactionary populists and fascists.

Immigrants make America better. Period. It's not up for debate.

If I'm a Democratic politician, I'm out making this case every day, convincing voters. If it turns out that no matter what I say, my constituents still hate immigrants, I wouldn't pander. I'd lose the next election and move.

This interview is heartbreaking and infuriating. Her story captures so much of what can make small towns beautiful and also what makes this moment in our politics so dangerous and evil.

“Please protect me,” she says. I dare anyone to say “Carol” doesn’t deserve to stay here.

Who do we want to be?
Ming Li Hui, who has lived in a Missouri town for 20 years, is getting deported. This has shocked and angered the locals, many of whom back Trump.

She spoke to us on our podcast straight from jail. She broke down in tears and made a wrenching appeal.

say it again:

4 million people work in higher ed, the largest employer in 10 states, second largest employer in 10 more, and in 60 of the 100 biggest cities

ROI for NIH and NSF for local economies is conservatively 4x, often close to 10x

demolishing higher education is economic sabotage
There is a false dichotomy drawn between "the ivory tower" and "the real world," and I'm here to report that in a post-industrial society, your real-world economy absolutely hinges on the university.

University towns are factory towns. Universities drive economic activity, not the other way around.

When this presidency ends—and it will end—we need a Rooseveltian plan to not only undo the damage he did, but build bigger than we’ve ever built before.

Big universal programs and mandates. Pack the SCOTUS. Kill Buckley v. Valeo and Citizens United v. FEC. New anti-trust laws aimed at Amazon. Etc.
Trump's executive order tonight has illegally cancelled union contracts for 67% of the federal workforce & 75% of unionized federal employees — roughly 700,000 union workers

This may be the single biggest attack on the labor movement in American history

Georgetown gets plenty of grief here over their rather "traditional" admission testing policies. Credit where credit's due: these new supports for their community exemplify the best of Jesuit values in the Ignatian tradition. 👏👏👏

I'm super excited to share this short brief on who has power over the Department of Education, what the ED Sec can do, and what Executive Orders can do.

There's a lot of info (and links!) packed into one place. I hope it's helpful. Please share.
