It’s Friday night, it’s halftime during the MSU game, and I haven’t had a chance to opine on Education Law here on Bluesky.

So - a brief introduction. I represent K-12 school districts across Michigan. If you have a kid somewhere in Southeastern Michigan, there’s a pretty good chance
The last few days have seen tremendous movement on President Trump’s EOs related to DEI work in schools. MDE issued guidance on Thursday and DoED issued an FAQ on Friday.

How many consecutive minutes of children screaming during the morning routine before it’s considered elder abuse?

Not a bad little snowstorm coming into town.

The number of typos spotted and also created in this process is… high.
That lawyerly compulsion to open an attachment, close it, and then open it again to make sure it didn't change before you send it out.

Then panic anyway assuming it changed.

On a day like today, the question is whether I won the multi-circuit lottery when I found you!
Welcome to all the new followers who are here because I said something nice about a former colleague.

This account is mostly very-obscure civil procedure jokes.

Once more into the breach.

I love my wife. Sometimes she makes hilarious mistakes. For Christmas, my daughters got Tonies, which (for those that aren’t deep into kids toys) are essentially RFID boomboxes. In the infinite pokemonization that has taken over kids toys, they come with figurines that sing songs.

Revisiting this…

Yes, that child stayed up to her normal bed time.

Yes, I’m also exhausted.

This tweet is causing me trauma in six minute increments.
Going to start a video sharing site just for lawyers where videos list their lengths in 0.1's of an hour.

My child woke up at 3:30 am and terrorized my wife and I all morning. This is my story.

Today is the first day back in daycare for my kids where both my wife and I work. God, please grant me the serenity to… yeah, I need the ellipses.

I stole this from Facebook but I don’t care.

This is an excellent resolution. And one I would fail at so horribly. This morning, I listened to “Let it Go” from Frozen on repeat after taking my youngest to the doctor for her three year well visit.
I don't really do resolutions, but I do think for each month of 2025, one of my personal goals will be to do a deep dive on a musical artist I'm either not familiar with or wanted to learn more about, and just generally listening to music with more intentionality.

This right here is the immediate risk of over-use of AI. But I do think there is room to use AI narrowly in legal practice today. And future iterations that connect the words to precedent (whether internal, or legal, or other) for review will help lawyers do the background details efficiently.
For a client I recently reviewed a redlined contract where the counterparty used an "AI-powered contract platform." It had inserted into the contract a provision entirely contrary to their own interests.

So I left it in there.

Please, go ahead, use AI lawyers. It's better for my clients.

I’m super interested in the AI space (and speak on it regularly with my K-12 education clients). I think its current format is terrible for legal research. I do think there is tremendous opportunity in contract drafting/distilling long documents. For example, I used Notebook LM for Title IX.
I don't know if it's just me, but the Westlaw AI-powered research thing is comically bad.

Me: "Find me cases about X"

Response: "I have found 12 completely irrelevant cases. Here, have a yellow flag calling a SCOTUS case into doubt because of a district court opinion as a treat."

I’m waiting for @dieworkwear.bsky.social to find a picture of me in my pink sport coat and roast me tbh.

… why???

I mean, I have small children so this experience is laughable right now. But occasionally, I can screw up my spouse’s coffee when I bring it to her in bed and we can enjoy 20 minutes without chaos. This sounds magical.
Remember that lady on Twitter who just tweeted about how she has coffee each morning with her husband, and the internet ate her alive?

Scolds are everywhere. Ignore them.
Saw someone upbraiding someone else for having a hobby while the world is on fire, and, my friends:

1. The world is ever on fire, this is today's conflagration;

2. If you don't find time for rest and joy the fire will consume you;

3. Don't let people shame you for being an entire human.

Every time a client and/or court system wants to use teams, I get grumpy.
How is it possible for Microsoft teams to be so awful? Just spectacularly bad and constantly makes it 100x harder to do anything with.

Everyone on the Teams team should be fired.

Each Sunday, I see more and more NFL skeets and every night I see more NBA skeets. I'm so happy with this growth here.
