Vision Zero plans need to include measures to reduce car use. Delivering the Safe System on its own is not enough; cities also need to reduce driving. The latest AVZ briefing highlights recent research showing that when car use falls casualties fall too.

New AVZ briefing looking at the (provisional) 2024 road casualty statistics in London. Key points below but fatalities up YoY; pedestrian fatalities up 24%. KSIs down slightly. People walking, cycling & motorcycling make up 81% of all London KSIs in 2024.

If disqualified and dangerous drivers are to be spared prison (as new Independent Sentencing Review proposes), punishment should include longer bans, vehicles confiscated and electronic tags (to ensure they are not driving whilst disqualified).

Preliminary findings of research from SUV Alliance finds that "...that heavier cars are more likely to be involved in fatal collisions and average car weight in the UK is increasing, which may lead to a rise in fatal collisions if the trend continues."

Latest briefing focuses on speed enforcement in London. Key points:

Yes speed enforcement is up in London BUT long way off the 1 million target especially with v high number of cancellations.

More enforcement needed on 20/30mph roads plus more driving bans.

Demand more police enforcement on London's roads. MOPAC is consulting on a draft police & crime plan for London (2025 to 2029). Ask for the plan to contain far more about crime on London's roads.
