How do we separate truth from fiction? Where do we set the bar for evidence? And what do we do when our familiar methods fail us?

These are the questions at the heart of my new book Proof.

Here’s a quick overview:

(Thanks to Basic Books for putting this together!)

A masterpiece cared for by the excellent Friends of Friendless Churches.
Today, March 25th, is the Feast of the Annunciation, commemorating the Angel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary to announce that she would bear the Christ child. One of the most popular subjects in Christian art, there are depictions of the Annunciation in two of our churches.

“Do not slander, and you will not ponder grief.

“Do not commit evil, and you will not gain eternal distress.”

An amazing feat of 3D thinking which is still meaningful today.

At a time when idiocy gets so much airtime it is good to remember wisdom has been around since ancient times.
Seems like pretty solid advice, even a few millenia later.

Folks should read more clay tablets, honestly.

Extraordinary footage with rock flying all over the place.
Two years ago today was one of the most thrilling moments of my life when I captured this sunrise eruption of Guatemala's Volcán de Fuego. My drone was much closer than I realized, and the eruption was the largest I saw in my two days up there. I may never again film something as remarkable as this:

Amazingly detailed hands - I wonder what the story is?
#frescoFriday a scene from the fresco cycle in #Tavant Church in the #Loire Valley. Admittedly relatively crude but full of motion and expression and quite unusual

In the past, my outlook on geothermal power was… less than optimistic. But times have changed, and geothermal power technology has improved by leaps and bounds in a variety of ways. Today I have a quick update.

Europe urgently needs its own plan of action concerning Ukraine and our security, or else other global players will decide about our future. Not necessarily in line with our own interest. This plan must be prepared now. There’s no time to lose.

Can’t help thinking there must have been someone local with a luxuriant beard and moustache on whom this was
modelled. They are beautifully painted.
A rare but rather fine wall painting of Thomas a #Becket from #Hauxton in #Cambridgeshire. Probably mid 13th century it is a rare example of Thomas shown as archbishop but not in the course of being martyred.

A mammoth in mammoth ivory! Thank goodness we didn’t lose it after 40,000 years
Remarkably, this little mammoth carved from mammoth ivory about 40,000 years ago was recovered from the excavation spoil at Vogelherd Cave, some 70 years after the original excavations (Tübingen Museum)

Given the frightening plummet in insect numbers last Summer a pause would be sensible. The Brue spraying list last year included Bruton Dam so glysophate could be swept downstream. Did you spot anything in your research indicating river invertebrates (already depleted in our area)are affected.
