If you had one more session with your abandoned #DnD character, what would you want to do?

"Be prepared for anything" is bad GM advice because it implies an expectation to have thought of all possibilities and have planned for each and every one.

"Be prepared TO FACE anything" focuses on developing active listening, adaptability, and improvisation, which I think are wayyy more important.

Collecting advice for DMs on how to make combat encounters more narratively engaging instead of getting stuck in dry combat mechanics talk.

TTRPGs and Improv! What's the first rule of improv that every one knows? "Yes, and..." Accept the story as it unfolds and build on what others contribute.

What’s the wildest idea your table ever ran with?

Am I the only one who has considered a deep dive into improv training for the sole purpose of improving bringing my characters to life in TTRPGS?

#DnD Hot Take:
I’m glad the 2024 edition removed advantage when flanking enemies.

Argument: Players focus too much on flanking, which creates boring conga-line combat.

Discuss.

🔴 Bloodied is back, and I’m here for it! 🔴

In the 2024 D&D edition, when a creature hits half HP, things get wild:

🪓 Berserkers go full rage mode
🦅 Blood Hawks hit harder
💀 Gnolls rampage
🟠 Ochre Jellies split in two (yikes)

As a DM, I can’t wait to throw this at my players.

2024 D&D:

Orcs are people just like you and me, they’re not inherently evil or anything.

Goblins are evil fey though so don’t worry your head about them, roll for initiative!

Speaking of DnD character sheets on Google Sheets, here's the template I created. Everything is set up with formulas, and instructions are on the first of the document

Let me know what you think! También tengo una versión en español

P.S. It's for 5e (2014)

Mine are on Google Sheets, but SAME
Newbie: Tonight was so much fun! I have a question though.

DM: What’s up?

Newbie: Where do you get all these cool ideas for NPCs?

DM, glancing at their notebook labeled “Characters I’ll Never Get to Play”: Oh they just pop into my head sometimes...

As a forever DM, I have never worked so hard at anything in my life as avoiding all information about the Curse of Strahd in the desperate hope that some day I'll get to play as a player.

All I know is it involves a castle and a hot vampire?

I highly recommend this book filled with short, easy, yet effective activities to help groups improv role play!

Gotta love the “rule of cool”
I’ve gotten to the point where I treat my #DnD games like I treat B movies:

“Wait how the fuck did he do that that makes no sense—I actually forgot that I don’t care, this is sick as fuck.”

I’m a Trekkie, and I just started watching The Orville. I gotta say it’s scratching an itch that the more recent shows haven’t been able to.

Is this what playing the Star Trek Adventures TTRPG feels like?

GM Tip: Not everything has to tie into the main plot. Let some encounters resolve in total isolation or hint at other distant and unrelated plot threads.

Kids on Bikes Game Masters, what stat would you have your players roll if their character searches for something, may notice something, or wants to evaluate if someone is being honest?

"Brains" just doesn't do it for me, and my brain is too stuck in investigation, perception, and insight from D&D.

This was fun to think about! I’ve been creating an original setting for over three years now, and these are some of the guiding principles
If your DnD game was turned into a movie/TV show, what do you think it's overall moral messaging would be?

Even (especially) if you never intended there to be a message or not the one you intended.

A Case for Rolling HP

Using average HP for monsters is easy but what's easy is rarely what's best. Rolling HP isn’t just a mechanic, it’s a storytelling tool. Here are 3 reasons I prefer to roll HP.
