Absolutely magical @lisaoneillmusic.bsky.social gig at the Royal Festival Hall last night with Cormac Begley supporting. Stories about Madge Heron and Violet Gibson and a warm humanity that does the soul good. An incredible artist.

Rewatching the 4th Doctor. Leela was always my favourite companion as a kid and I can see why. Why can't they be more original with companions in New Who? I thought Clara had potential when she was introduced but they wasted it. I'd love to see an alien companion again.

Just stayed up on a school night watching The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai in the 8th Dimension. Absolutely bonkers film from 1984 that really deserves to be better known.

Just back from my second Circus Fit class. Not some new keep fit gimmick but run by our local circus skills company. Great fun and a damn good workout too.

Happy New Year everyone. 2024 is one I'm glad to see the back of. High hopes for 2025.

Happy mid winter everyone. I will not be sorry to see the back of 2024 but now enjoying a little oasis of calm. I hated Christmas for many years but eventually came to see it as a necessary beacon in the dark months. It will always be a complicated season but I hope you have a peaceful one. c

Watched Emilia Perez on Netflix yesterday and loved it. A fully operatic sweep for a musical and great performances throughout.

Three weeks back after my operation and I'm beginning to find a rythm. Also, today I have my first haircut since April. Not quite at lockdown levels of wookiness but looking forward to a few inches off.

Just got a Remarkable 2 and loving it so far. OK, I've only had it for a day but I love the idea it will take 3 notebooks out of my bag. All my course documents and pdfs too.

Just deactivated my Xitter account. It felt far more portentous than it no doubt is. So much on there over the years. Friends made, arguments had. Worlds watched. But Twitter is dead and I just can't be doing with X. But I just wanted to mark the moment (albeit somewhere else).

It's been a pretty tumultuous year so far. I parked my PhD, was diagnosed with cancer, had a hysterectomy. Yesterday I taught my first secondary school English class, today my second. It was a little bumpier than I would like but it felt good. Finally starting the next chapter.

Finally made the decision to close my Twitter account. Life is just too short. It's been 16 years and I've made so many friends there but it's time to go. Just waiting for my data before I go.

Just watched All of Us Strangers and I am undone. Highly recommend.

Today I sat a maths exam. It also covered English but I'm pretty sure I've got that. Maths exams on the other hand have always been the stuff of nightmares. It really, really does not come easy. But 1 step closer to being an English teacher. 😊

Also last time I was here I was lamenting the fact that we had just come down with Covid. Still wheezy and feeling rubbish 6 weeks later. I actually tested again today just to make sure. My asthma is worse than it's been in decades. Not fun.

So before Christmas I did get accepted for teacher training. I started my SKE in English this week. The difference with this route (which is based in a school) and the interview I was turned down for which was uni centered. The one I got asked me about my experience. The other about buzz words.

I've managed to avoid Covid up to now, as far as I know. I'm fully vaccinated. 9 days after testing positive I still feel awful. Still getting a positive test in under a minute too. How long does this thing last?

Also my inner pedant is itching to correct something but I already feel rubbish about it so probably not eh?
November 9, 2023 at 7:32 PM
I asked for feedback about not getting a place on teacher training and the response back does make me feel better as I don't think I'd be a good fit but it does make me wonder about the perception that the Leaving Cert is lower quality than A levels.

I'm just upset at the moment. I could be a good teacher. But while people seem happy enough to pay me to teach they won't train me.
November 6, 2023 at 3:35 PM
I had applied to teach English and media. I've been a writer for 20 years, and a journalist but I am apparently unable to understand how these subjects are taught in schools. Again, I'm teaching English at the moment but never mind. I don't have enough subject knowledge.
November 6, 2023 at 3:31 PM
I've been applying for teacher training. I love teaching and I'm good at it. I've said that I'll do a subject knowledge enhancement course whatever hoops they want. I'm currently tutoring SEND students in interim provision for gcse. I'm applying for training not a job. All I get are rejections.

We tend to watch Halloween on the night itself, along with Ghostwatch. But October is the month for the kind of horror Carpenter excels at.
October 6, 2023 at 9:57 PM
Watching #thefog is an October tradition. Probably my favourite Carpenter film thanks to Adrienne Barbeau who was always my radio role model.
