I’m getting the scoop the same way you do! Eavesdropping on the party line, smoking on street corners, decoding messages in the personals ads…
Seriously considering packing up to eke out a life in the woods because I couldn’t verify a stat I want to put in an article. Woodland reclusion is preferable to misinformation. “When in doubt, leave it out.”
"An important distinction needs to be made between carefully reported and fact-checked articles and what seems like a glut of information at our fingertips at all times...social media reports offer relatively few new facts that have been borne out of rigorous reporting."

Why the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s closure exposes a growing threat to democracy
When reputable local news outlets close, fewer people vote and get involved in local politics, and misinformation, corruption and polarization increase.

I should have started working at 9,
I didn’t and the fault is mine,
Now I watch ‘24 council meeting,
Outside it is rain and sleeting.

I'm not aware of any other Council override of a Strong Mayor veto.

This may be a first in Ontario. (again, I'm not 100% sure)

Sarnia Council votes 6-3, the minimum 2/3rd super-majority requirement, to override a veto issued by Mayor Mike Bradley #onmuni

Being a relatively unknown reporter is nice because not only do you get to say the name of your paper three times in a row like a spell before people get it, you ALSO get to send emails into the void. (Wouldn’t trade it for anything.)

I got an NS archives card to write this piece. It’s so easy and the archives are so cool.

Also, the Examiner agreed to publish my words. Lucky me :)

More than anything else, I'm quite annoyed that the province is making the city do a public hearing, to get public input on a plan that the province has zero plan of listening to. It's just disrespectful and contemptuous of Haligonians' time and of our municipal democracy.

Also 10% cut to program grants, reducing services and increasing rates. To keep the tax rate flat. I feel like I’m gonna have to wear my coat in council chambers bc at this point the heat may also need to be shut off to keep the tax rate flat.
Oh, he has a list, it's mostly cuts. Like cutting HalifACT funding.

Yeah im an “amateur local cartographer” (couldn’t make it to Eisner Cove Wetland before part two of this piece)
An earlier version of the Board of Police Commissioners story incorrectly said that the Board’s motions still need to be approved by the council. They do not. We regret the error. Police reform in Halifax is officially underway.
