This. Thank you, Nate.

I am seeing a lot of takes from edu-folks (notably many, but not all, don’t work in disability or special education) saying that Trump’s threats to dismantle the DOE and public education are not as big and scary as they’re made out to be.
1/9
The two largest and most immediate casualties of eliminating the federal Dept. of Ed would be students with disabilities and students attending Title I schools (families that qualify for free or reduced lunch).

I'm thinking a lot about a post on the other place disparaging the "science of learning" and how it isn't a thing. And, while it's a murky term with multiple disciplines and learning is hard to research, we do need vocabulary to talk about the research on and practice of learning.

And I'll re-state my original point by saying, in response to this passage, that we can, and should, do all of these things simultaneously. Of course we can acknowledge the role of politics in education, examine evidence critically, etc.

When teaching reading comp, don't give Ss questions about the main idea. This is an assessment tool, but not something that develops reading comp skills. Instead, teach Ss to summarize, analyze text structure, & paraphrase. Tim Shanahan explains: www.shanahanonliteracy.com/blog/why-mai...

This blog entry explains why main idea instruction tends to be ineffective at raising reading achievement and explains the instructional features that do improve reading ability.

Emily Hanford researches for years to report on reading instruction. Her haters, “she’s not even a teacher!”

NPO w/ not one person on their staff who’ve taught 25 1st graders how to read decides they know everything about early lit bc some staff taught MS and HS. This is okay bc “they’re teachers”🙄

Penguins are champion power nappers. They fall asleep thousands of times, each bout a few seconds long, over the course of a single day, researchers have found. It may be an adaptation to their noisy and crowded colonies. www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/s...

This is so well-deserved!

Congratulations to Emily Hanford for articulating this important message, arming parents with the knowledge needed to challenge ineffective practice.

And showing teachers that there is another (effective) way.

Congratulations to Emily Hanford who has done so much to highlight how so many children have been taught to read (but haven’t learnt) using ineffective methods.

If you haven’t already, do find it and listen 🎧
