Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

What I don't have in experience, I make up for in integrity.

And what Andrew Cuomo lacks in integrity, he could never make up for with experience.

CW: protester being struck in the head by a pepper ball

Footage I took earlier of the moment Reverend David Black, a regular protester outside of the Broadview Detention Center, was shot in the head with a pepper ball by ICE agents on the roof of the facility.

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it?

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say?

Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

If you haven't heard Governor Pritzker's speech, it's worth listening to every word. We need more of this from our leaders - a clear delineation of the fascism we are facing, and a call to action for how we must all respond: youtu.be/Q04p3OJdhpU?...

Now is a good a time as any to make my first bluesky post, and to have it be a reiteration of my long time refrain: WORK REQUIREMENTS DON'T WORK! Thanks to @behscientist.bsky.social for resurrecting this piece.
In a recent op-ed, officials in President Trump's administration argued that recipients of programs like Medicaid should be required to work in order to receive benefits. In this piece from our archive, Anthony Barrows explains why work requirements don’t work & can make it harder to escape poverty.
Work Requirements Are (Socially) Toxic Sludge - Behavioral Scientist
Work requirements for anti-poverty programs don’t encourage work. Instead, their principal effect is stripping people of the benefits they rely on to survive.
