Zohran didn't win by relying on standard turnout patterns. We had to fundamentally transform the Democratic electorate.

I was part of a group of NYC-DSA members that applied lessons from our previous campaigns to design the “universe” of voters to talk to. Here's how we won 🧵
Tonight, 20 Dem senators voted to keep a hemp ban in the final spending package:

Fun fact: Shore Haven was built by Donald's father Fred Trump, almost certainly with Mafia involvement! We discuss this in my podcast episode about the mob and the World Trade Center: youtu.be/GMD7wNB-ZzM?...

Shore Haven Apartments (very Muslim rent-stabilized complex in Bath Beach, Brooklyn)

2024:
🔴 Trump 63% (314 votes)
🔵 Harris 33% (162 votes)
⚪️ Write-ins 4% (21 votes)

2025:
🔵 Mamdani 68% (302 votes)
🟡 Cuomo 23% (102 votes)
🔴 Sliwa 8% (36 votes)

+35%, +140 vote swing

Okay, I’m convinced. Zohran will outperform Harris in dozens of Muslim and South Asian precincts across the city—EVEN WITH Cuomo on the ballot.

Taking a break after 7 hours at a poll site in Richmond Hill. I've never seen turnout and excitement in my neighborhood for an election like this. A constant stream of uncles, aunties, and their kids—Guyanese, Punjabi, Bangladeshi—flashing huge smiles and chanting Zohran's name.

An uncle in Richmond Hill points at Zohran’s face on a poster: “I like this guy! He’s the best candidate. He’s the only one for the layman. I’m not voting for the rapist.”

Richmond Hill is ALL-IN for Zohran! So many excited South Asians and Indo-Caribbean folks, especially young people, are headed to vote for the next socialist mayor of New York City 🫡🫡🫡

A Guyanese teacher just came up to our table. She’s voting for Zohran tomorrow because she takes the bus every day and the fare keeps getting more expensive. She supports free buses and is disgusted by Cuomo’s racist attacks. She also took a universal childcare button “for my daughter” ❤️

Young Bangladeshi couple walks up to our Ozone Park table; they want to check if they’re registered to vote because they mailed in their forms last week. Turns out, I knocked on their door just a few hours ago! They registered just to vote for Zohran and will vote tomorrow🌹🌹🌹

Guyanese man walks up to our Ozone Park table and points to Zohran’s name on a poster: “That’s my guy!”

Says he’s seen him on the news; he’s tired of Trump and his cuts to food stamps. “He only cares about the rich, not the poor.” He took a button and is voting tomorrow 🫡
