Our own shameful history isn’t taught or highlighted in popular culture. This quote cuts through the noise and slaps you in the face. imagine black people may grow up learning about this through family and culture but I’ve never heard it as a Gen x white person

Well, lots of people don’t know it, so perhaps it *ought* to be taught in schools. I wish I’d known it sooner, because I believe it, coming from such an amazing man who stood up for his rights. He’s admirable, and while schools teach us about him, they don’t teach it all. I wish they would.

I lived through that era. The war was already dividing America but when Ali stood up and said "No" and called out the absurdity of it all, his dissent became a lightning rod.

Ali's voice may have done more than any other to end that war.

He was a great and still under-appreciated man.

Interesting fact - the Vietnamese Constitution is almost a complete translation of the American Constitution. Ho Chi Minh admired the American work ethic but deplored their greed. Imagine how matters would have turned out if they had worked with the Vietnamese rather than bombing them.

I met him once.

Never meet your heroes...

Is a bullshit opinion of folk that never met Ali.

Still ranks as one of the greatest days of my life.

Absolutely enraptured by the warmth of his hug... Absolutely terrified by how his eyes could chisel a stare.

Absolutely humbled by him.

I’m an American and I’ve never heard it or seen it before in my life. This is my first time hearing it. It’s nice to assume everyone knows what you do, but some people don’t. Some schools are such cowards that they don’t teach it for fear of “controversy”, and so kids don’t know they’re missing it.
