This is an unusual opportunity in Germany where the idea of Tenure track is relatively new. A 'W1' is basically an Assistant Professor, (although the Germans translate it to the sad-sounding 'Junior Professor').

We have 2 PhD fellowships in Area/American Studies at U Oslo. Though for a PhD completion, it's treated as a job w/ strong benefits: healthcare, pension, maternity/paternity leave, paid vacation, etc. Annual salary is NOK 532,200-575,400 ($50k-$54k).
