We need more radical media.

It is so important that we make and share stories that fill us with light, that challenge the apocalyptic norms of capitalism, that expose White patriarchy, that feed our dreams for a better world. We must be waking each other up.

Often thinking about this movie, and especially recently. The only ethical response to n@z1s is v*olence.

The more I think about this movie, the more I like it.

I am struck by its human tenderness, its disarming whimsy, and its surprising and tragic darkness. Repression kills, and we all deserve love.

Not sure we give Kanopy enough credit for having such a great, expansive catalog filled with new releases and deep cuts alike, for free via library card - yes, this is another reminder to support your library.

My #2 movie from last year is the beautiful and harrowing THE DEVIL’S BATH, shot in rural Austria and Germany.

It has a stunner of an opening scene, and it interrogates how our internal lives are shaped by culture and religion.

It’s hard to find big enough words for THE SUBSTANCE.

Coralie Fargeat’s follow-up to REVENGE is another singularly gripping and stylish piece of genre filmmaking. Every member of the cast & crew commits. Pure gasoline.

My # 4 horror movie from last year took a juicy handful of horror tropes and blended them into a dark and funny puree about revenge, belief, and institutionalized power.

ODDITY is so delightfully dialed-in, and a great example of nimble Irish horror cinema.

# 5 I got a ~little too high~ and saw this cool mystery-thriller in theaters. A rewatch confirmed my feelings: this weird stylish movie is one of my favorites from ‘24.

Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens both act their faces off, and the sound design is really fucking good.

# 6

I’ve seen this movie making the rounds on #filmsky and it’s well-deserved.

A precise and deeply disquieting psychological drama that feels quite at home in the horror genre. A deeply cutting excoriation of the true crime industry and the complicity of voyeurism.

A great 🧵 for artists and everyone interested in building resilient communities. The imperial boomerang is here and we need each other
In the 1990s, I ran an underground zine of Gothic fiction & poetry called SHADOWDANCE (1991-1996)

Underground presses - run out of ppl’s basements, garages (in my case, dorm room) - were some of the only places to publish queer, anticapitalist, pagan, punk & countercultural material

# 7

A devastatingly gorgeous movie. Deeply rich and atmospheric, an impressive attention to detail.

Something about the plot and its resolution I find troubling, but hard to elaborate without spoilers. Either way, see it in theaters.

Did you know you can pirate and help pirate every piece of Dungeons & Dragons property that Wizards of the Coast has ever put out and that alternatives to all their games exist?

It's really neat. And Wizards can't _really_ stop any of it, even with the Pinkertons they hire.

What we are witnessing during this inauguration is not novel, and it’s not about red v blue.

This is ruling class vs working class, and it threatens the continuation of life on this planet.

We must protect each other and organize our neighborhoods.

Bigots get blocked.

Every year without fail a nasty little indie movie completely sneaks up on me and lands in my top 10.

Last year it was MADS: a frenetic 89 minute outbreak movie, and one hell of a oner. Streaming on @shudder.com. #filmsky

# 10 on the countdown was a fun theater experience. Practical effects kick ass, the set design is great, and the ending gets weird in a cool way.

For a storyteller who lived outside the lines of genre convention, David Lynch directed some of the scariest moments I’ve ever watched in film & television. RIP
