This terrifically researched explainer on not just auto worker labor relations but the post WWII international automotive industry in general, is absolutely well worth a read.
Up through the 1970s, the UAW actually opposed tariffs. It focused on organizing across borders, championing solidarity over zero-sum competition, industrial policy over reductions in investment. @lfelizleon.bsky.social has a great history lesson here.
