Historian of the French Revolution. Currently interested in rumors circulating in Paris in June 1789.
Hear me out: What if Marie-Antoinette refused to associate with Mme. du Barry at the court of Louis XV because the young princess didn't want to get caught up in a kingdom-wide sex-trafficking ring?

[FETE DES MORTS] Aujourd'hui c'est la fête des morts... Auguste Comte avait lui aussi envisagé une "fête universelle des morts" - prévue quant à elle le dernier jour de l'année - dans son système public de commémoration.💀

My first attempt to cut a 17,000-word chapter draft for an edited volume resulted in me adding 529 more words. The contractual limit on the chapter's length is 8,000 words. Help!

1. Modeling data does not a historical argument make.

2. Lefebvre might have written an early classic, but his sources are not the complete 'archive' of Great Fear rumors.

Looks like my book is in this @cornellupress.bsky.social sale! Want to know how a wildly unpopular king trumped up an attack on a Muslim country to justify suspending the rule of law at home? But then ended up getting overthrown himself? This is the book for you 🗃️

20 June 1789 was a magical day. Defying the king's order that they not meet, deputies of the Third Estate walked to a convenient indoor tennis court and swore an oath to meet wherever they had to so they could fulfill their mission: writing a proper constitution for France.

For some reason, I can't help but think of the Réveillon affair of April 1789. How did that work out for the king, anyway?

June 9, 1789 was a relatively quiet day in Versailles. Jacques Necker had proposed a compromise to reconcile the Third Estate and Noble deputies who had blocked the Estates General from doing business. The Nobles had flatly rejected it. Some Third Estate deputies saw an opportunity.

I've been thinking about how to increase my book sales. What if I write a joint biography of Robert E. Lee and Marie Antoinette, in which I reveal their secret love affair and how Abraham Lincoln ruined it by informing Louis XVI, which led to Lee's defeat at Gettysburg?

Yes, I was late to work this morning. The cat had jumped into my lap. What was I supposed to do?

I know this is a bit late. I wanted to say how much I enjoyed seeing everyone at the SFHS at Hofstra University in mid-March. Such a wonderful conference. Many thanks to everyone involved in putting that gem together.

Wow, just had a negative experience with Harry & David. Did you know their Blueberry Pancake Mix has IMITATION blueberries in it, with natural and artificial flavoring? I'm only taking to the internet because their customer service was so terrible--and there's no email address!
