people in canada - pay attention to what's unfolding here, and not just w/Trump. Poilievre is promising to criminalize protest, deportations for pro-Palestine activism, withhold $ from universities, deny existence of trans people, implement three strikes laws & huge privatization. fight fascism here

"Abolish ICE" sounded like a radical demand to Democrats, though ICE itself only dates to 2003.

Today, it should be clear to even the most deluded liberals that if you establish institutions for the sole purpose of brutalizing people, authoritarians will inevitably use them to consolidate power.

For the record, do I think a one-day boycott is going to make much of an economic impact? No. Do I think that a sort of "Baby's First Boycott," performative though it is, might be useful to make some folks aware of the impact of their economic power, and how it might be wielded politically? Maybe.

Weird how not a single one of the newspapers and magazines that have been breathlessly churning out "cancel culture" thinkpieces for the past four years have managed to use the word "censorship" at all to describe the most rapid and comprehensive campaign of mass-censorship in recent US history.

while it can be cathartic to watch canada stick it to trump, rhetoric of "strong, north, free" is not anti-colonial or david/goliath fight. it's slogan rooted in Canada's enduring colonial logic of dispossession and militarization.

thinking about internationalist solidarity, beyond elite spats.

trade war btwn imperialist allies (US & Canada) is means to use economic nationalism to rally behind otherwise status-quo. struggle between 'foreign' & 'domestic' capital maintains capitalism, hurts ppl through price gouging, reinforces racist nationalism & intensifies extraction on Indigenous lands
