2024 was a year filled with joys and sorrows, family and friendship, travel and adventure, and with labour and rest.

@suzania.bsky.social and I posted our review of the year earlier on our Substack. argosy.substack.com/p/44-2024-in...

Why I Went Cold Turkey on Political Theology
Alastair Roberts writes that in its place, he steeped himself in the gospels, and found that the way he read them shifted dramatically.

In our latest, @suzania.bsky.social recounts her time at a postliberal conference in Cambridge and her suffering from the flu. I post some reflections upon the importance of the Infant Jesus for our understanding of the Incarnation.

My next @davenantinstitute.bsky.social course is 'The Psalms: A Bible in Miniature'.

It is an intense exploration of the Psalter and its place within the life and worship of the Church. Students who take it should come away with a much deeper understanding and greater appreciation of the Psalms.

My next @davenantinstitute.bsky.social course is on the Psalms, their relationship to the wider canon, their theological importance as a form of Scripture, their literary features, their place in Christian worship, prayer, and life, the history of their use, and their witness to Christ.

For some reason, over the past few years the question of whether David 'raped' Bathsheba has repeatedly surfaced on social media, been the subject of heated disagreement, and then disappeared until the next Bathsheba season.

I just produced a video on the subject. www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4GQ...

This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

"Our manifesto is postliberal in a genuine sense that is neither anti-liberal, nor populist, nor integralist, but rather radically associationist – an order of the world that is founded on a politics of virtue and bonds of belonging, flourishing and love."

What is postliberalism now?
The old order of rampant individualism is dying. The West must make a decisive break with the past.

The Ransom Trilogy is a neglected part of C.S. Lewis's work, yet hugely important for the @davenantinstitute.bsky.social. 'Life on the Silent Planet' is a new Davenant book, designed to encourage people to explore it.

Rhys Laverty, Jake Meador, and @suzania.bsky.social joined me to discuss it.

A lullaby for tonight: I was in my thirties before I realized that the U.S. and U.K. use different tunes for "O Little Town of Bethlehem." Here's the Brit version. Notice the lovely descant (counterpoint) in the last verse. See you around.
