2024 was a year filled with joys and sorrows, family and friendship, travel and adventure, and with labour and rest.

@suzania.bsky.social and I posted our review of the year earlier on our Substack. argosy.substack.com/p/44-2024-in...

In our latest, @suzania.bsky.social recounts her time at a postliberal conference in Cambridge and her suffering from the flu. I post some reflections upon the importance of the Infant Jesus for our understanding of the Incarnation.

• How can Christians sing, pray with, and use the psalms devotionally?
• How have the psalms been used and interpreted over the history of the people of God?
• How can the psalms be restored to their proper centrality in the life of the contemporary Church?

• How do the Psalms relate to the figure of the king?
• How can we make sense of the imprecatory psalms?
• How do the Psalms develops the tradition of the Torah?
• How are the Psalms used and remixed in the later canon?
• How do NT authors connect the psalms with Christ?

Some of the questions that we will be considering in this course:

• What place does song have in Scripture more generally?
• How are the books of the Psalms structured?
• What are some of the literary features and devices of the Psalms?

The Psalms have been sung by the people of God for over three millennia. They occupy a distinctive place in the scriptural canon and the Church's worship.

You may have been singing them all your life, but this course is a chance to reflect more deeply. davenanthall.com/course/psalm...

My next @davenantinstitute.bsky.social course is 'The Psalms: A Bible in Miniature'.

It is an intense exploration of the Psalter and its place within the life and worship of the Church. Students who take it should come away with a much deeper understanding and greater appreciation of the Psalms.

My next @davenantinstitute.bsky.social course is on the Psalms, their relationship to the wider canon, their theological importance as a form of Scripture, their literary features, their place in Christian worship, prayer, and life, the history of their use, and their witness to Christ.

In our latest post, @suzania.bsky.social wrote an obituary for her uncle and I shared some Advent-related thoughts on hermeneutics and also on the meaning of the temple.

One of our longest posts to date, even though @suzania.bsky.social was not involved!

* My time in Marseille with my brothers
* Retrieval and how it can go wrong

* Voting as virtue ethics
* Being prepared to 'die'
* Many links!

This looks like a fascinating course!

(Some pictures of mine of places that come to mind in connection with such a course—I wonder if anyone can recognize them all!)

I'm flying out to the US today. I was able to finish knitting a blanket for my father before doing so.

Rowan Williams's remark about Jordan Peterson's use of commentaries is correct, although it is rather worse than he suggests: pretty much every reference to a Christian commentary is taken from biblehub.com.

It is unfortunate, as with good interlocutors Peterson's work could be so much more.

Ryan Burge (@ryanburge.bsky.social) posted this graph earlier of the trend in traffic to his newsletter through the transition from the old to the new algorithm. From ~40% down to ~1%.

Hanley more generally is in a sorry state. However, there remains much to be proud of within it.

Some restoration and preservation work has already been undertaken on the building but its future currently seems to be in a state of limbo.

Like much of our incredible architectural heritage in Stoke-on-Trent, it has suffered from the city's decline, lack of funding, and neglect.

Just over a week ago, I took advantage of an open day to visit Bethesda Chapel, a former Methodist chapel in Hanley, formerly called the 'Cathedral of the Potteries'.

The building once seated around 2500 people, but, as the congregation diminished, closed in 1985.
