The Old Monk is one hell of a swing-- a boss that hijacks another player and press-gangs them into fighting you.

Absolutely killer idea.

The lore flavor is tasty as well. I love the mountain of chairs. Why stack all those chairs? I'll never know, and that's great.

The demon of Latria's chambers are mere steps away with only a smattering of eldritch jailers, enthralled to the end, offering a last line of defense. At the top of the Ivory Tower of Latria, on the summit of a maddening mountain of chairs lies smote the remains of the traitorous King of Latria, long dead-- animated by a slithering, parasitic demon extruded into the world by the colorless fog. The demon, a nondescript dyed yellow cloth of considerable length, quickly abandons its long-spent host and plucks from the ether between worlds a soul-- innocent or sinful, it is unknown-- to puppet. The demon's desperate gambit proves foolish as its press-ganged host crumples like soiled laundry. The great demon that whispered a kingdom to ruin is vanquished with no ceremony-- crude material, returned whence it came.

Yes, the plot and the cutscenes are not great, but I still find the gameplay interesting, especially after the Prime formula that was starting with the third (imo) to overstay their welcome.

I adore the art style of this game, both the PC-88 anime cut-scenes and the sprite work. They actually drew opposite sides of the player sprite instead of just mirroring it!

I just wish I enjoyed actually playing it.

In the anime-style opening cutscene, the beautiful Princess Felicia la Felishika shudders in terror as a menacing apparition of Jashiin, the Emperor of Chaos manifests with ill intent. Felicia has been turned to stone by the demon Jashiin, freed from his magic prison after two thousand years. Her face is serene and she displays great poise despite her predicament. In gameplay, protagonist Duke Garland swings his mighty sword on a large, aggressive frog in the dank caves under the town of Muralla. He has cute wings on his helmet. At the end of the first dungeon, Duke Garland, now equipped with a shield, lands a killing blow on the giant enemy crab known as Cangrejo.

The #ScanlineSunday combo. Put Kirby Super Star on the 8000 pound Trinitron #CRT and.... Well, my original save battery died for this. I took one pic on Milky Way Wishes, the game froze, and when I rebooted it, there were no saves left. I should buy a bunch of those easy swap battery holders.
Intro cutscene Intro custcene Chilly has no idea he's about to have a fly beamed into his face. Since my battery died, I did a run of Spring Breeze. Took out Whispy pretty easily, especially with the help of Waddle Dee.

As someone who mainly knew of the X-Men from the 90s tv-show, this game is much appreciated for adding Rogue and Gambit to the roster! They were cool as hell then, they're cool as hell now.

On a busy bridge in the nighttime glow of the city, intrepid aikido girl Kasumi Todoh absolutely manhandles Mai Shiranui, tossing the stacked ninja to the ground like a sack of flour. Ferocious Ikari Warrior Leona Heidern and well-dressed Fighting Artist Robert Garcia engage in what I can only describe as an intense Jojo pose competition as the sun sets in the American South West. Dapper kick-fighter King spectates, waiting to show Leona her moves. With the noon sun glinting off of receding canal water, Psycho Soldier Athena Asamiya attempts a roundhouse kick on handsome ninja Andy Bogard. Her target, thinking well ahead, anticipates and evades the kick and then locks in on her root chakra with the intent to deliver a blow that will, one assumes, explode from the top of her skull like the cosmic consciousness. Downtown, with currents of working people streaming by, Fighting Artist Ryo Sakazaki attempts a high kick on hot-headed brawler Kyo Kusangi, who, with uncharacteristic cool, anticipates the strike, dodges and prepares to deliver the back of his hand to his opponent's nards. Let us pray for them.
