New paper from me: wild Orkney starlings use pieces of wool to clean themselves! I spotted this tool use by chance out the window, so we can chalk this one up to daydreaming.

Some starlings even made tools, gathering bits of wool into a clump 🧪🪶🛠️🐑

Enjoying the snowbirds. Dark-eyed juncos are so variable they used to be called different species.. if I’m honest, the different types with different colors and ranges SEEM like different species… but what do I know. I wish you could at least specify type on eBird. Below, slate-colored type. 🪶❄️

Recovering from COVID, I haven’t had a chance to get out birding in a while. All the more reason to be grateful for the back yard birds in winter, reliable fluffs of joy for just the cost of a few peanuts and seeds. White-breasted nuthatch in Tulsa, OK. 🪶 #feederbirds #backyardbirding

Though I know it’s the most colorful, flashy birds that usually draw us into birding, I’ve come to be more interested in the subtleties that distinguish diverse but sometimes overlooked groups, like sparrows. Here, though soon to be renamed, a juvenile Harris’ Sparrow in Bixby, OK USA. 🪶

Speaking of cold and snowy, here is one of my favorite Snowy Owl pictures from Michigan last year. The only reason it isn’t my favorite is that it happens to also be the moment I learned you can’t shoot out the window of a hot car in the cold without getting haze - darn! 🪶🦉❄️🤍

As I turn my attention to the AABA meetings this spring, I am excited to see friends and colleagues for the first time since pre-pandemic, and also happily remembering more recent acquaintances, as pictured (L. catta Tsimanampesotse park, Madagascar). @biologicalanth.bsky.social

Though I am looking forward to the spring migration, a perk about my recent move to OK is that the sparrows that passed by me quickly in MI are here for the whole winter. Here is a Savannah Sparrow I saw in MI last spring, maybe it's here in OK now! #Birds #migration #sparrow #imisshashtags
