A tank-trapping, carbon-capturing bog barrier to keep out Putin? Governments in Finland and Poland say they're looking into making this a reality.

My big summer read, w/ @nikamelkozerova.bsky.social and @wojciechkosc.bsky.social, on defensive bog restoration:

www.politico.eu/article/russ...
From Kyiv to the Suwałki Gap, bogs return as Europe’s defensive shield
Restoring the EU’s drained bogs would stop both Russian tanks and planet-warming pollution.

Current plans to tackle global warming will only save 3 percent of Europe's Alpine glaciers from disappearing this century, with most melting away within the next two decades, a new study has found.

Interesting bit in an interesting thread on EU/US economy
Why?

Because neither ILO, OECD, WIL, etc. subtract the depreciation of natural capital

The US produces $81 of gross output per hour, but at a particularly high cost for the planet

The EU27 produces $71 of gross output per hour, but with dramatically less carbon emissions

Germany wants to undermine the EU's 2035 clean car mandate and allow "highly efficient combustion engine cars" after that.

What, you may ask, is a "highly efficient combustion engine car"?

"A highly efficient combustion engine car is a combustion engine car that is highly efficient," per the govt.

Arriving in Brazil after a messy fight over new emissions targets, the EU salvaged some of its climate pride at COP30.

Two weeks of climate negotiations hardly ended in triumph Saturday.

But they did end, with a deal that even critical delegates said shows that a divided, leaderless collection of nearly 200 nations can make some progress.

www.politico.com/news/2025/11...
The world is fractured. The climate talks reflected that.
Delegates from nearly 200 nations — not including the U.S. — showed they could make some progress. But they deferred the hardest decisions.

“We are not fighting fossil fuels, we are fighting the emissions from fossil fuels," Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, just as the EU's negotiators are trying to push for a global deal on transitioning away from fossil fuels at COP30.

Von der Leyen says EU is not fighting fossil fuels, only emissions
The comment could undermine European countries’ push at COP30 to move away from coal, oil and gas.

Generally interesting (and not in a positive way) how few interviews von der Leyen gives.
Some interesting infos, but the most important part is the setup - rather than doing a major personal interview, this is a collection of written replies.

In my view, part of the job of the Commission President should be to communicate with the European public(s) and speak directly to media.
Ursula von der Leyen has responded to written questions submitted by several European newspapers.

🧵 Her answers resemble last week's State of the EU speech but are worth breaking down.
