When funds allow were going to double glaze the place. The frames allow for it, it’s an easy install so that’s a blessing. Although the glass is the expensive bit. Knucklehead chose e-glass instead of double glazing and didn’t save that much money.

Ours is a cheap-to-build sandwich of cladding-frame-gyprock. He claims the insulation is in the frame, so...

I don't think we can, but it has crossed my mind
January 9, 2026 at 1:30 AM
Well exactly.

We call him "Mr Five Coats of Paint" in this house because that was one of his wilder claims.
January 9, 2026 at 1:02 AM
It's worse than that.

"Nah, nah, nah, it's meant to be like that."

He's baffled by the idea that our solar installer is a woman and that we'd want solar in the first place. Dude must be made of money to think you'd want to run all that air-con off the grid.

Also under-specced the air-con...

I'm quite ready for the resulting removal of said walls to reveal no actual insulation because he's that kind of fellow. What blows me away is that he originally built this house for himself but the relationship with his fiancee/business partner exploded and he had to sell.

Overly-comfortable outdoor recliner with a built-in misting system for hot weather. I call it the Spray-Z-Boy. Don't crush my gerberas when you back the money truck up to my lawn.

We're looking into what we can do to replace the R1.5 with something actually useful but hellfire, it means pulling down either interior or exterior walls which is no fun at all.
January 9, 2026 at 12:46 AM
May as well have just shoved some cardboard in there. R1.5 along an unobstructed north-facing wall! Which transmits heat into the flooring itself, so on hot days the carpet is *warm*.

So we have to run the air-con all day to stop it heating up. Luckily we have solar so we can afford to do it.

Wildly unhappy with Australian building standards at the moment. We have a brand new house with a long north-facing wall. It's painted white (good), upstairs is clad rather than downstairs' double brick (okay I guess) but after telling me "it's well insulated" he just meant "insulated" (R1.5).

"Explore relevant opportunities with Burberry."

Yeah, no thanks.

It was interesting, I watched the wholesale price across the day and it was very stable. Only real difference was positive feed-in tariff for most, if not all of the day, at least on Ausgrid.

I still sometimes wake at night and think, "Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner really took that Disney budget and did so little with it they should probably bow out."
