I'm doing a whole project about why this happened
At one point in American history, almost every state had annual elections, typically for the lower house. These were gradually changed mostly to 2 year terms, but 2 & 4 years are just about the only lengths states use these days (few w 6 year terms)

State Senates are stupid already, but their term lengths make them dumber. Most have 2 year terms (no different than the State House/Assembly) or 4, but several have an idiotic 2-4-4 system where some years they serve 2 year terms and some years 4, and some states (TX, AR) decide it by drawing lots!
