Good news

The first vaccine designed to target the entire SARS virus family, GBP511, has entered human clinical trials.

Developed by UW Medicine and brought to trial by SK Bioscience, it aims to protect against COVID-19 and future coronaviruses before they spark the next pandemic.

New dashboard feature!

Events like holiday breaks and inclement weather can lead to disruptions in the #wastewater sample collection and testing process, delaying updates to our dashboard. When you see the alert icon, click to find out about potential #data reporting delays.

So far there has only been one US patient reported with BA.3.2.

Meanwhile, these are the wastewater detections to date.

Want to know what's really going on? Check the wastewater; we don't miss shit.

While transmission is unlikely it can't be ruled out. At least 2 Cryptic-like variants have transmitted:

• Early 2022, Iran, 4 patients, ≥1 death (a child)
• From Canary Islands (Dec 2022/Jan 2023) to Spain (Oct 2024), 2 patients, ≥1 death.

Fascinating 🧵. The grotesquely mutated spike of this NJ Cryptic binds ACE2 very tightly.

It raises a broader question: Can cryptic wastewater-like lineages transmit?

YES

We knew it happened once. Now we know it's happened at least twice. The results in both cases were not pretty. 1/15
This is wild.
Remember the NJ crytic lineage?
I posted 18 months ago that the Spike was too divergent to predict ACE2 binding, and asked if someone else could figure it out.
Some colleagues took me up on it.
Guess what they found?

It's a slow but persistent wave.

22 more wastewater detections of BA.3.2 (including ALL recent samples form RI). It's staring to be the dominant lineage in many cases.

I think the score on wastewater vs patient surveillance is now 44-to-1

SB 5947- Establishing the Washington Health Board would trigger the establishment of a board to create a single payer, universal healthcare system after receiving important federal waivers (notably ERISA and Medicare). This is inspired by this national bill and Maine’s similar trigger law. 👇

SJR 8206 - Protecting Affordable Healthcare for Washington Residents would create a Constitutional protection for healthcare for documented residents. This bill needs a ⅔ vote in both chambers. It then goes onto the ballot for Washington voters to approve. Oregon passed a similar amendment in 2022.👇

Washingtonians, we have two new bills that could bring universal healthcare closer for you!

Both bills will be heard in committee between 8-10 am on Thursday, 1/29. This hearing is a crucial step in moving the bills forward and public input will help shape the legislation.👇

Last year we created an online tool to help track #measles exposures across WA. This map brings together info from local health depts into one convenient, easy-to-navigate platform. It's mobile-friendly, too.
