It looks like the golden-haired dog is sniffing the ground and the gray dog is already aware of it. Are there any other clues in that picture which may indicate the wind direction?

Are the dogs in the center, in that lighter patch? The gray dog is looking to the left, and the golden one is a little further back and coming forward?

Yeah. I became interested in Portugal because of Macao. Both places punched well above their weight among their geographic neighbors.

It does seem like a beautiful country—heat waves, fires, and Chega excepted.

You've referenced Portugal/Portuguese/Portuguese culture a couple of times on here, as well as a part in Karla's Choice. Is there an underlying interest there for you?

Onwards and upwards!

Hey, at least you didn't drive in that condition. 😁

I recently saw a post (if it was you, reply to claim your shout-out) about a Taiwanese corn snack called 乖乖 (pronounced "guai guai"). It means "obedient" or "well-behaved" in Chinese. People put them on machines to make them work properly. Here's the copier and water machine at work today

I grew up on the Canadian prairies. That looked like a winter scene even before I read your post.

Can I ask for best High/Epic Fantasy reads (that aren't Tolkien 😁)? I'm on the lookout for notable works in that subgenre.

In today's internet creepiness:

We received our Lodge cast iron skillet last night. Today, Instagram is recommending I follow the account of the importer here in Taiwan.

Post a perfect album from the '90s that isn't Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains.

Interesting that both China Miéville and Yann Martel will have new fiction out in 2026 after long hiatuses.

Anything else on these lists that piques your curiosity?

Culture vs fun has always (co-)existed. It's a trip to a museum or national park vs a trip to an amusement park or a major shopping center. There isn't anything new to the argument, just a shift in the proportional share of each and how loudly people shout their views.

Excellent subterfuge on their part!

You are in charge of a movie studio and have an unlimited budget to adapt any work of your choosing that has never been made into a live-action TV series or film. What are you picking?

- Our Game, #JohnLeCarre
- Rose, #MartinCruzSmith
- Dark Voyage, #AlanFurst
- A Burnt-Out Case, #GrahamGreene

OK, less contentious post:

You've been placed in charge of a movie studio, and have an unlimited budget to adapt any work of your choosing that has never been made into a live-action TV series or film. What are you picking?

For me: PC Hodgell's Kencyrath Cycle and there's no close second

Good grief, Mr Lynch. Are you getting into the holiday spirit or something? 😁

My student's hoodie today. I wish it were in my size. It could actually make me want to wear a hoodie.

Some of that looks good. Some not so much so. How much local cuisine do you usually eat when you're there? How good is that salted cod?
December 16, 2025 at 12:24 PM
I was wondering how long it would take, but today it happened. I had my first student say, "Six, seven." She's in grade four.
