The California state fire marshal was legally obliged to release the single-stair report on January 1. A month later, it's nowhere in sight, and I'm hearing the draft recommends doing the bare minumum. State legislators should just pass the code update themselves.

California’s fire safety regulators are more than a month late with a study on mid-rise apartments and staircases.

it's bad that GM axed their Brightdrop EV vans due to tariffs and anti-EV govt policy because those would be perfect for this

The Dodgers finishing 20+ games ahead of the 2nd place Giants is not great for their postseason chances, but is great for me as a Giants hater

The end of this era led to a crack in the Democratic coalition, eventually resulting in Trump's reelection in 2024.

Liberaltarianism was the dominant ideology of the Democratic Party through the long Obama era. It led to lots of great policy reforms like marriage equality and weed legalization. It ended in 2020 when COVID required government to say you could just not do what you wanted to do
IMHO the theme of the 2010s is that progressives achieved every policy goal from my teenage years but in every case decided that legalization was good but regulation was for losers.

similar to my thought that we should use Caltrain as the brand name for trains throughout California, except for the current Peninsula line, which should be branded as BART

Megyn Kelly's career evolution has basically been the Matt Bors Nazi cartoon in real life. I know she's always hated any visible diversity (Santa), but she sounds far more unhinged about it now

in a sane world we would be doing everything possible to make e/bikes a default mode of travel for short distance journeys.
It really annoys me that the moral panic over e-bikes obscures the incredible impact they have had for disabled people.
This. For the disabled they are a vital tool, and without mine, I am housebound. The inherent ableism infuriates me, especially since I am a careful rider. In every incident I have been in, and there are very few, I was the victim not the cause. Every time.

it's all vice signalling for what the dominant VC class dreams of seeing after they freaked out that millennial tech workers stopped actually working in 2020 (read: demanded some basic work-life balance and time to raise their kids)

Sometimes I think “everyone is twelve” is overstated. Then I see the literal health secretary announcing that he will never eat his vegetables and you can’t make him.
RFK Jr on what he'll eat during the Super Bowl: "I am on a carnivore diet so I just eat meat and ferments, and I'm very happy with that. So I'm probably going to have yogurt."

I try not to be a scold about what social media platform people use, but I don’t understand how anyone should want to stay on a Discourse Platform like X, The Everything App if this is the discourse you’re going to get exposed to. What is to be learned from this exchange?

this may be the single most insufferable thing about the radical centrist caucus - not just extending good faith to obviously bad faith people but demanding everyone else do the same and chiding them when they don’t
A lot of our political discourse would be easier if we didn't extend good faith to people who would never extend it back.

I have to wonder how long Reddit gets to remain an uncaptured media site. It’s basically the last mass site fulfilling the job that pre-Musk Twitter did

This happens with*everything* now. No matter how grave the crime or one-dimensional the injustice, after four days the hivemind of American punditry decides that the Real Story is how the people upset about it are the real villains.

We are actually a very wealthy country overall, but our land-use policies and patterns make us feel like we're poor. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
If your household, not you, all of the income earners in your household, make over $130,500/yr, you are better off than 60% of American households.
