Every B&N changes their catalogue according to their regional customer base. Indie bookstores make an effort to stock things no one else will.
The reasons bookstores has made a resurgence: community. It’s actually a big deal.

In fact, B&N has been expanding rather a bit recently; their sales are up and they've refreshed their stores. And independent books stores have been growing in numbers too! It's been quite a turnaround for brick and mortar bookstores in the last couple of years. I hope it lasts.
I'm more shocked they're still opening new B&Ns.

Reminder that, unless a creative freelancer has a spouse with a day job that offers health insurance, they likely have an ACA plan. And with the hits to creative industries the past few years, I'm guessing many qualify for subsidies.
