Although I work at the zoo now, I still know a lot of people in entertainment journalism, so let me help you out. If you’re going to use puns in your Primate coverage, remember that chimpanzees are great apes, not monkeys. You’re welcome.

Apparently a Laker walked past me and a co-worker at the zoo today? It was my co-worker who recognized him, obviously. I didn’t get the name.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

My daughter drew this picture of our cat for our relatives as they were deciding whether or not to brave the storm and come over for Christmas.

Fridge is broken, roof is leaking, older cat peeing everywhere but the litter box, and we’re all at some stage of getting over being sick, actually being sick, or starting to feel sick. But at least our Xmas Eve and Xmas Day plans were canceled because of the torrential rain storm. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We discovered tío nadal on a trip to Barcelona last year and bought one at a Christmas market. The kids were so excited to see him again this year.

Barista: Can I get a name for the order?

[Music starts]

Snowmeiser: I’m Mr. White Christmas, I’m Mr. Snow, I’m Mr. Icicle, I’m Mr. 10 Be-

Barista: Dude, I just need something to put on the cup.

The walls change, but everything is very scaled down, so it’s not as impressive.

They do, but fewer lights and they don’t swing as far.

The Broadway set is so expansive! I saw it at the Walter Kerr back in 2021 and have only seen national tours since. It makes a difference. (The trap door, for one thing.)

One of the many reasons AI can't produce good writing is it can't hate its own writing. It can't think to itself "Maybe I'm illiterate" during the writing process. And that's essential

I’m so glad to have a chance to see Merrily We Roll Along via pro shot I didn’t even mind the odd editing and too many close-ups. But I did keep thinking about Lindsay Mendez and Katie Rose Clark playing Elphaba and Glinda (Clark especially), and how Wicked was playing right next door.

I am busy the month of December mapping out a hypothetical 3rd season of “Smash” instead of writing poems.

Have a blesséd day.

The L.A. Zoo has 5 great ape babies right now — three chimps, an orangutan, and a gorilla! Here’s the oran baby (no name yet) with his mom, Kalim.

Our final show was My Neighbor (or Neighbour) Totoro. What a magical theatrical experience! It uses elements of Japanese traditional stagecraft, puppetry, and the film’s brilliant musical score. Honors the original while making the most of the stage medium in a charming and artistic way. I cried!

After getting out of Cabaret we booked it to Canada Water for Phantom Peak. Not a stage show but an open world adventure set in a western mining town with townsfolk who send you on quests. There are games, challenges, and a mysterious backstory and secrets to uncover. Would definitely go again!

Wednesday was a double feature. I wanted to see Reeve and Eva together in Cabaret (we saw them in Hadestown in 2021) but Eva was out sick at the matinee, so we got an understudy. Still just as good as it was in New York, though.

Next was Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy at Riverside Studios. Starts in a pub-like space and takes you on an adventure through space, with the characters leading the way through improv and interaction. There’s music, comedy, heart, and despite deviations from the source, an engaging narrative.

I’ll do a thread on these because we’re driving down to late Thanksgiving with the in-laws. First up, Ride the Cyclone at Southwark Playhouse Elephant. This was mainly for the teens, who’re obsessed. Quirky little Canadian musical that’s steadily gained steam online. An inventive and fun staging.

We’re home from London! Final show count: 5 (if you count Phantom Peak, which I do). Also. Ride the Cyclone, immersive Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Cabaret, and My Neighbor Totoro. All so different, but each one amazing in its own unique way.
