It would be weird to go, "I want to critique British imperialism but I just love the AESTHETIC of America" and now the Appalachian protag is driving their lorry to queue for petrol.

That's how I felt too - I looked it up out of curiosity, and the director was raised Evangelical but didn't like the Evangelical aesthetic, so he did choose Catholicism specifically for the visuals. So our read on this turned out to be pretty spot on. theplaylist.net/rian-johnson...
