With recent news about payment processors such as Visa and MasterCard forcing popular markets like @itch.io and @steampowered.com to de-platform some products due to content, I'm finding myself interested in seeing @lastweektonight.com drawing attention to this chilling speech regulation by corps.

I've always been a bit of a moth to flame when it comes to exploring new hobbies and interests. I went to trade school, learned a lot about hobbies and crafting from my father, and am a huge nerd. My wife has frequently come along for the ride. We are thinking of starting a podcast to talk about it.

The MITRE CVE database is apparently going to go offline today due to lack of funding from US CISA/DHS. It is unknown why, presumed related to DOGE. This will undermine the cybersecurity industry globally. If this isn't funded, there is no backup plan. www.reuters.com/technology/u...
US funding running out for critical cyber vulnerability database, manager says
The defense and research-focused nonprofit MITRE Corporation says funding from the U.S. government runs out on Wednesday for it to maintain a critical database of cyber vulnerabilities used by security researchers and digital defenders the world over.

I need a fresh cut of "If I had $1,000,000" where they just stop singing at "I would buy you a house" and just smile at the camera while continuing to play.

Not a new thought, but at some point in the past 10 years, the internet became increasingly centralized and significantly worse. I've heard this described as 'enshittification' and it suits. AT Protocol and the Fediverse are necessary tools to combat this centralization.

I think it already is.

But seriously. Don’t call them names. We want the door open for them when they realize the mistake they made.

Extremely disappointed in @bambulabglobal.bsky.social's recent announcement regarding "security" firmware updates that will effect 3rd party tools. I had intended to purchase an X1C in the upcoming weeks but will no longer be doing so unless they reverse this course. K2 Plus seems like course now.

No thank you.

I don’t want my appliances to connect to my wifi, I will only purchase appliances that do not come with that feature.

Unrelated to my trend of posting tech BS, at the suggestion of a friend I built my first Gundam model a few weeks ago. Not being new to models, I started with an RX-78-2 MG kit because I am convinced I can do anything.

I did. And have built 2 more kits since then. It's so satisfying. Like LEGO.

If you use a digital service or product produced by a for-profit company and do not pay for it, then odds are the data you produce by using it is the real product.

Google is not now, nor has it ever been, a "search company". It's an advertising company, using data from it's services to target ads.

I've been seeing a lot of backlash towards digital services adding "AI" to everything, pointing out no one really wanted it or asked for it.

Which I know I - personally - don't want it, so that begs the question: If it doesn't benefit the user, than how does it benefit the company deploying it?

Apparently this story got even more nuts when Funko called the itch.io operators mother, BrandShield has victim blamed, and Funko released a non-apology statement. Just awful. I was ready to ignore Funko in this too.

After that last series of posts, I now think I need to design a URL shortener so I have one I know will be free and I can trust.

Getting started with network wide ad blocking involves a little bit of investment of time, possibly some money.

First, you need a computer to run it on. An old PC or laptop is fine. I like a low-power mini PC for it, such as these: shorturl.at/hrL1R for $75 on Ebay.

Nothing opened my eyes to how much advertising we're really exposed to on a daily basis as much as integrating ad-blocking into my home network, then using normal internet while traveling for work. Night and day difference, and a reminder of what we've apathetically given up.
People actually love surveillance capitalism, they'll share their GPS location and watch ads every 90 seconds rather than pay for services. Advertising is the magic sauce that makes everything run "for free," so much people cannot even conceive of any utopia without its latent subsidy.
