On January 11, Patty O’Keefe and her friend, Brandon, were in a parked car, exercising their First Amendment right to legally observe law enforcement proceedings. That’s when ICE pepper sprayed the vent of Patty’s car. “We held our hands in the air and told them we were not obstructing, that the car was in park and they were free to drive forward and away,” Brandon said, who was sitting in the passenger seat.Instead, ICE smashed the windows of Patty’s car, opened the unlocked doors, and pulled them both out of the vehicle. Arresting them both under charges of obstruction. They were driven to the Whipple federal building, where they saw dozens of brown people being processed in an unheated garage.Patty and Brandon spent the next 8-9 hours in a jail cell. “I just kept thinking about how much I wanted to go home,” Patty said. “But then as soon as I thought about that, it hit me that we can go home. We will be able to go home. These people in here, we saw probably about a hundred people. They’re not going to get to go home.” Patty and Brandon are one of hundreds of U.S. citizens who’ve been arrested by ICE in Minneapolis. Despite the trauma they lived through, they’re both clear: they’re not backing down. They’ll keep exercising their rights to observe, to speak out. Because they love their neighbors–and our country–too much to see it come to this.
