I also spent a not insignificant amount of mental effort developing grim fantasies of ways I could get back at Cal, make Paul Westerfield pay, and punish Sugar for her callous behavior. Looking back, it's easier to see where you went wrong, how you were all in for something so wrong. Like a gambling habit, revenge can backfire and blow a hole straight through your heart, but you just keep rolling the dice or spinning that wheel because you can't see any other way.

We rehearsed the scene over and over again, Sugar adjusting the tone of her dialogue with each go. Her performance ranged on a scale between full-on hysterical to completely flat and inexpressive. She explained that she was trying different approaches to playing Catherine. She didn't ask for my opinion of her performance, but she did say (somewhat grudgingly) that I had some natural ability. It was clear she enjoyed me sucking her thumb.
