But deserts are home to some incredibly specialised bats, including this one, the pallid bat.

Have you ever been snorkeling and spotted Nemo darting in and out of a sea anemone?

They might look like plants or underwater flowers, but sea anemones are actually animals, closely related to jellyfish and corals!

The largest animal to have ever lived on Earth!
Even the biggest dinosaurs were smaller than the blue whale

An adult blue whale can reach over 30 metres in length and weigh up to 180 tonnes, yet it feeds almost entirely on tiny krill

This is a nilgai, Asia’s largest antelope, though it’s often mistaken for a cow or a small horse.

Despite the nickname “blue bull”, nilgai aren’t cattle at all.

Meet the bearded vulture, also known as the lammergeier.

Meet the Northern Pintail, a common duck you may have already seen without realising it.

They’re easy to miss because they don’t shout for attention, but once you notice the long neck and those pointed tail feathers, you start seeing them everywhere.

Do you remember Rafiki from The Lion King?

Well, he was a mandrill.

That blue and red face isn’t random. In the wild, those colours help signal status and health, especially in dominant males. Once you know that, it’s hard not to notice it.

Ever noticed a small duck with a bright blue bill and wondered what it was?

That’s a Ruddy Duck.
The blue bill shows up in males during breeding season, it’s one of the easiest ways to spot them if you know what to look for.

Have you ever been travelling and spotted a large bird flying on open ground, and assumed it was an eagle? - You’re not alone.

In much of the Americas, that bird is often a caracara.
They’re raptors, but they don’t behave like most birds of prey

We scan the stars for alien life and lose ourselves in sci-fi worlds like Avatar, imagining what extraterrestrials might look like. But you don’t need a warp drive to find one.

Some of the most alien-looking creatures on Earth, like this one:
The Saiga antelope.

Have you ever been near a pond, heard a sudden croak, and assumed it was just a green frog?

Same.
For years I thought all green frogs were basically the same animal.
Turns out, “green frog” isn’t one species at all.

If you’ve ever watched The Lion King, you know exactly who I’m talking about, those highly intelligent, super social African carnivores that always seem to be laughing.

Jackals are small, sharp-witted canids found across Africa and parts of Eurasia. They’re opportunists through and through: hunters, scavengers, survivors.

And also some of the most threatened.

Cat or dog?
Nope. Meet the genet.
Often called a “civet cat”, but it’s not a cat at all!

Genets belong to an older carnivore family.
Long tail for balance, sharp claws for climbing, and a body built for night work.

Hawai‘i is one of the world’s most isolated island chains , thousands of kilometres from any continent.

Because of that isolation, evolution went a bit wild here. More than 90% of Hawai‘i’s native species are found nowhere else on Earth

Get to know them:

Meet a local from Hawai‘i! The Scarlet Honeycreeper, also known as the ʻIʻiwi.

Its long curved beak fits inside the native flowers. But no its range is very limited.

Because they can’t survive malaria, and when mosquitoes were introduced, their range shrank!
