I think the influence of Piranesi’s etching, “Dark Prison with a Courtyard for the Torture of Criminals …”, c1750 was a major influence for the arrangement of facing arches in Sir John Soane’s dome at his museum at number 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

Really looking forward to David Olusago’s new series ‘Empire’ this evening and for the next three Fridays. A great historian, so unassuming and without an ounce of arrogance or pretentiousness. My kind of historian.

Original wooden water pipe from Hampton Court Palace

This was donated to Gerald Heath between 1960-1970
The wooden waterpipe dates from the time of Henry VIlI when he had water transported to Hampton Court Palace for baths. It was from the right hand side of the Palace.

‘An abstract Deist rather than a conventional Anglican, John Soane consciously eschewed all Christian symbolism in his designs for monuments and mausolea. He chose instead to pepper them with pagan symbols of eternity, above all the serpent biting its own tail’ (the ouroboros).

We seek #volunteers who love talking to visitors to work as little as 2 hours per month. We are a lovely little museum housed within a 300 year old Georgian building. We really need volunteers to keep the museum open. Email Housemanager@twickenham-museum.org.uk if interested.
