If I wanted something that felt official I'd play the real one dammit
i feel that whole thing with fangames and mods having the expectation of having to feel "official" probably ruined a lot of the fun of making those things in the first place

There's a whole generation that learned irony before sincerity and now they're trapped. Can't be earnest without a layer of self-deprecation. Can't be enthusiastic without signaling awareness of how cringe enthusiasm is.

mario world's art comes from people that were masters of pushing the hardware *on the NES* but felt the repercussions of nintendo dipping out of the arcade scene so quickly (where the competition was perfectly comfortable with 16-bit by the late 80s)
Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.
