Contrast paints didn't exist when I painted my Word Bearers but it was prime black, dry brush grey and glaze red then touch ups and other spot colours.
The glaze was made by putting dishwashing detergent into the paint. It makes acrylic paint flow and be transparent.

She also didn't like when I showed another student how you can use dry pastels over paint for a soft blend and made her paint over it.

I once did a Rothko style abstract canvas painting mostly with kitchen sponges and my art teacher hated that I wasn't using a brush.
