Chinese apps are a completely different world than western apps, lots of mutual learning is possible
In certain Chinese apps, you can @ the app’s bot and say “stop showing me this type of content, start showing xxx” when you see content you don’t like. I think that’s pretty cool!

super impressed and grateful for the immense care within this diverse community 🫶
Really impressed by the commitment here. I can't wait to discuss the survey with social scientists. And the preceding collection of ideas in the wild. Perhaps it is methodologically questionable? I'm curious. But so far, I have only seen such a data set in large-scale social science studies.

after a fun chat with @laurenshof.online and @ronentk.me I finally made time to write up some more thoughts about interoperability in the atmosphere without needing to share lexicons!

Two Types of Interoperability Without Sharing Lexicons - Wesley's notes
Sharing lexicons is not the only way to leverage atproto’s interoperability

obviously the results of this do not replace the important and necessary user research work (s/o to @christian.bsky.social for spearheading this!). But it is quite fun, and insightful, to see opinion groups emerge on this topic. And polis is a fantastic product
I went ahead and created a pol.is conversation about this, pls contribute! pol.is/7bdiwbvh2d

First time using it, hope it helps surface useful insight!

Announcing atproto.science! #ATproto has huge potential for supporting new ways of doing research, so we started @atproto.science to help bring together researchers, build community, and explore what's possible when science meets cutting-edge open social network protocols! 🧪 >
Empowering science communities with open, democratic, researcher-owned infrastructure.
We’re building communities and tech for publishing, curating, sharing, and discussing research online using ATProto and other decentralized protocols.

This is a rly important question, especially for the future of science communication. There’s a bigger design question here about attention allocation systems. Notifications (e.g. of ppl commenting on ur post) is a form of this. We need better tools (and policies) for configuring them.
What could we do to make it better? I would invest a lot of time and energy if I could think of something to do! Our own moderation system? A labeler that filters to people who generally reply in good faith? A standalone client just for academics??

It would be awesome to use a collective deliberation tool like polis for making sense of atproto ecosystem-wide discussions like sign in branding / terminology. Bsky threads are not the appropriate format. plus many more voice can contribute meaningfully.
December 20, 2025 at 11:24 AM
There’s aggregation and there’s discourse facilitation (ie discourse graph affordances). We’re hoping Semble can support both for some time, but eventually we’ll prob have to commit to one, and defer the other to an ecosystem effort. Which is the beauty of ATProto, don’t have to do it all alone!
That's to say, someone needs to build the "discourse aggregation" atproto app. Semble is close to this but not quite it.

Our first iteration of notifications! What else would make sense? E.g. getting notified if someone Semble’s one of your bsky posts or @leaflet.pub pubs? @ mentions in a card note? Semble page alerts?

Today, we're opening up Seams Alpha (seams.so), a social web annotation built in the Atmosphere. We're hoping it helps with collective sense-making.

This is just the start, there's still lots to do!

We'd love if you tried it with us.
