Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

Separated Bike Lanes Means Safer Streets, Study Says — Streetsblog USA
Cities that build protected lanes for cyclists end up with safer roads for people on bikes and people in cars and on foot, a new study of 12 large metropolises revealed Wednesday.

A city traffic engineer credits the success to lower speed limits and smarter design. "A lot of factors contributed to this, but speed limits are one of the most important". There were 277 injury-causing traffic accidents - in contrast to ~1,000 accidents annually in the 1980s.

Here’s the “elephant in the room” with the outstanding (and FAST) growth in urban biking here in Paris — the tension between 2 NATURAL ALLIES, people on bikes and people walking, needs work, lest it become a political wedge issue. FACT: The more people choosing to walk, bike & take public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for EVERYONE, including DRIVERS.

Anyone claiming that less car dependency is a “war on cars” doesn’t understand how cities (or geometry) work.

Remember, Paris wasn’t “always this way.”

Not that many years ago, Paris was choking in car traffic. And it wasn’t a safe place to ride a bike for transportation, so not many people tried.

This is new. This is a result of deliberate vision, and bold leadership.
