Another mild winter in all probability with best chance for snow between Christmas and New Year. wansteadmeteo.com/2025/12/02/l...
London winter forecast 2025/26
This winter is looking mild or very mild overall with slightly above average rainfall. This year I’ve added to my previous method of forecasting by also considering the 12-month rolling rainf…

More #apricity today. Feels like we’re out the other side.

Mandelson is an absolute shoo in for Trump’s Bored of Peace
Looks increasingly like Mandelson's salary was nominally paid by the taxpayer, yet he was actually working for Epstein
EXCLUSIVE:

Lord Peter Mandelson lobbied the US government on behalf of Jeffrey Epstein and Jes Staley in 2010 when he was business secretary, using their talking points in conversations with an American official about financial-crisis reforms

A good illustration of how unusual the precipitation / prevailing wind has been this month can be seen by reports from Glenmuick No.2 gauge (nr Ballater)

Noticeable and very welcome apricity this morning!
January 28, 2026 at 11:23 AM
A run of mild nights has seen the January mean lift to 4.6C, just 0.6C below average now.
Looking back to January 2014 this month's minima is currently just 8th coldest out 13! A cold start but whatever happened to the severe doomageddon promised by the tabloids?

Astonishing how much wetter Glasgow is than London, especially going into February.
An excellent tool to compare city meteorology.

There's been an easterly wind blowing since Monday yet the lowest temperature recorded here in that time is 5.5C! Some 8.4mm of miserable rain. The near continent mostly mild.
January easterlies ain't what they used to be.

There's been a distinct lack of high pressure so far this winter compared with previous years. Here's the 9am readings.

A faint green through the clouds at Wanstead Weather Towers last evening which could only be seen through this camera phone rather than the naked eye. Which may say more about how lousy my eyesight is these days than real life? #Auroraborealis

"On average, one person contributes around 968 grams of CO2 daily from social media use.
Over a year, this can equate to approximately 353,466 grams of CO2, similar to the emissions from a long-haul flight."

So, stop the literal doom-scrolling and take that long-haul flight?

Some 2.5mm of rain overnight brought the January total to 32mm, already 60% of the month average. However, 50 days on from when I last looked and the rolling 12-month total has increased just 1%!
But a look at past 10 years would suggest we're about to enter a very wet cycle.

The opening week or so of 2026 has already seen 30 per cent of frost hours recorded locally in an average year. Nearly 64 hours of -0.1C and lower already represents more than half of what was recorded here in the whole of 2020!

-6.1C the overnight low, more than 8C below average. It's been 15 years since I've recorded something so cold in the first week of January.
Elsewhere, some nine UK stations recorded -10C and lower.

Look at the visibilities in this lovely cold, clear Polar air. Heathrow reporting 55km. Much less in falling snow in Scotland.

Few averages from Wanstead for 2025 and how they compare with last 10 years or so.
Biggest takeaway was the lack of rain; the total of 458.4mm, 73% of average, made it the driest for 22 years and 4th driest in a local series going back to 1960.

Arome modelling a lot of precipitation in the North Sea and Netherlands. Beyond that a signal for a Pembroke Dangler to set up and last through the weekend with the 528DAM line way south into northern Iberia!!
Happy new year all.

The high pressure centre over us is spreading nearly all the way to the southern tip of Greenland! Just look at the satellite image!! Could have conveniently forgotten but I can't remember the last time I saw something similar at this time of year.
December 30, 2025 at 5:22 PM
In terms of the mean December is still over 2C above average. However, average maxima over the past 7 days has been the coldest for 15 years! Nothing notably cold but what IS notable is just how mild many recent Christmas periods have been.

Christmas day was, locally, the coldest for 5 years. The high of 5.7C.
Most notable was the sunshine, a total of at least 6.1 hours at Heathrow would make it the sunniest since 1953, the third sunniest in a record going back to 1881!
The joys of dry continental air.
